Danielle Carruthers

danielle carruthers pictures

Danielle Carruthers is an American track star whose specialty is the hurdles, 100 meters outdoors and 60 meters indoors.

Dani first gained notice at Indiana University, where she won the 2002 Big 10 Conference titles at both the Indoor (60m) and Outdoor (100m) championships. That same year she set an American collegiate record of 7.92 in the 60-meter hurdles. She's since lowered her personal best to 7.88.

At the 100-meter distance, her personal best is 12.56. Carruthers won the USA Indoor hurdle championships at 60-meters in 2005 and 2006, and barely missed a threepeat in 2007, finishing second.

"At this time everything is pretty simple," Carruthers told me. "I spend a great deal of my time training to get my body in top shape to get ready for the Olympic Trials."

Dani's coach is track legend Gail Devers. When she's not training, Carruthers like to help local kids with their own track training.

"Ultimately, the main objective for this year is to make the Olympic team in July, so I can have the honor of representing my country in the Olympic games on August 8, 2008. Just the sound of that date is so exciting."

Yep, it's Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva.

Yelena was the Olympic gold medalist in 2004, setting a world record, and went on to earn IAAF Female Athlete of the Year (and again in 2005).

In 2005, she became the first woman vaulter to make it over 5 meters, and continues winning major meets.

Expect to see her starring in Beijing in 2008. Isinbayeva is considered by many to be the best female pole vaulter of all-time.
