Angie Akers was an All-American volleyballer at Notre Dame, then played professionally in Sweden. But she took a detour in her volleyball career, switching to distance running for several years. She competed in road races and ran the Boston Marathon.
In 2002, she switched to beach volleyball, despite having never played it before. Good move. She was Rookie of the Year in 2002 and continues playing pro beach volleyball today.
